How I use Canva to plan a room online and important features to know about.
Curating the perfect space to fit your style and needs can be overwhelming. You know what you like, but sometimes it can be hard to piece everything together. If you're like me, it's all about the visuals! Having the ability to plan a room online is extremely helpful.
Before I commit to purchasing, I almost always create a digital mood or design board. While there are lots of options out there to use, I have found a program called Canva to be the most user-friendly.
The picture below is a mock-up design that I created in Canva for my master bedroom.
Designing this room online made me feel way more confident about my purchases. It also assured me that I probably wouldn't have to worry about not liking an item as much in person. If you're like me, you don't like dealing with returns... especially for larger items. 😅
Here are some features you should know about when using Canva.
This tool is only available in the premium Canva Pro plan but it is SO worth it! (Pro is $12.95/month for up to 5 people, but they also have a free trial). With this tool, you can erase the background part of the images you pull from different websites.
After you upload a picture and drag it to your workspace, select it - choose effects - then background remover tool and it is seriously that easy!
To find it, select the image you want to move - choose position - and use the forward and backward options.
This particular tool allows you to move multiple items at once and keep them together. Say you have styled a shelf and love how it looks, but you still want to play around with the location of it in a room. This is the tool you want to use!
To use it, select all the images you want to group together (either by right clicking and highlighting them all or holding down shift and selecting the items one by one) - choose group.
The locking tool is great for when you have made a decision about an item and want to lock it in place. It helps prevent accidentally moving that item when playing around with other features on your board. I used this for the nightstand and table lamp once I was happy with it.
To find it, select the item or items you want to lock - click the icon that looks like open lock in the top right.
Don't make the mistake of forgetting where you found everything! I like to link the exact place where I found the item to the image I place on Canva.
Select the image you want to add the link to - click the icon that looks like a chain in the top right corner - and copy and paste the link in.

All things considered, being able to visualize things together digitally has made a huge difference when designing the rooms in my home - especially when I'm starting from scratch! I would love to see your digital design boards vs. real life photos 🤗
